Text messaging
statistics provide data that allow users and providers to reflect on
how many users of mobile services actually to texting. During the
relatively short history of the SMS technology, implemented in the
middle of the eighties of the twentieth century, as a protocol defined
for the GSM mobile communications system, the Groupe Special Mobile,
later Global System for Mobile communications. The SMS protocol itself,
is a standardized communication protocol that was invented to allow the
interchange of written text messages between users of cellular phones,
or rather mobile phone devices. This technology is in use today as
well, other networks like the new 3G network, short for third
generation mobile telephony standard.
It is currently known that almost every second living person on the
globe is using SMS, which is three quarters of all mobile phone owners.
In the United States, SMS became popular after the turn of the century,
with the use booming in the last few years. While in the nineties of
the previous century not even one SMS message per customer, per month
could be charged, the current average is somewhere around two hundred
messages per user, also per month. According to pertinent surveys, four
out of five mobile phone users in the United States are using text
