Text messaging
statistics provide data that allow users and providers to reflect on
how many users of mobile services actually to texting. During the
relatively short history of the SMS technology, implemented in the
middle of the eighties of the twentieth century, as a protocol defined
for the GSM mobile communications system, the Groupe Special Mobile,
later Global System for Mobile communications. The SMS protocol itself,
is a standardized communication protocol that was invented to allow the
interchange of written text messages between users of cellular phones,
or rather mobile phone devices. This technology is in use today as
well, other networks like the new 3G network, short for third
generation mobile telephony standard.
It is currently known that almost every second living person on the
globe is using SMS, which is three quarters of all mobile phone owners.
In the United States, SMS became popular after the turn of the century,
with the use booming in the last few years. While in the nineties of
the previous century not even one SMS message per customer, per month
could be charged, the current average is somewhere around two hundred
messages per user, also per month. According to pertinent surveys, four
out of five mobile phone users in the United States are using text
messaging. The split among the different age
groups is very
significant; namely nine out of ten teenagers and young adults are
texting. Is the limit raised to the age of thirty seven, then the
percentage drops slightly below the three quarters. People who are in
the forties are almost not texting, every fifth one is using this
feature. People in the thirties are a little more active, almost every
second person is using the SMS texting capability. The crowd of twenty
two year olds and down to thirteen is the most active crowd, it seems
that every single teenager is sending and receiving text messages.
Businesswise, SMS is turning into an obscene rip-off, with profit
margins hitting ninety per cent. Globally viewed, almost a hundred
billion American
dollars worth of texting has been done with an average pricing range of
ten cents per message. It is the current estimate that in the United
States every month around hundred billion SMS messages are sent.
Wireless subscribers are currently reaching over ninety per cent of the
American population. These text messaging statistics are staggering and
show the actual significance this medium has obtained in short ten
years. Just a decade ago, almost nobody was using text messaging to
communicate. Right now, there is almost not a single person without a
cellular phone, with the large majority using the SMS service.
